What's happening with the Red Cedar Book Award Club?

We are a group of 25 to 30 students in grade 5 to 7 who meet each Wednesday morning at 9:35 to discuss, blog about and write book reviews for the current Red Cedar books. There are 12 fiction and 12 non-fiction books on the list. If you would like to find out more about the different titles click here.

This  year we have teamed up with a class from Aberdeen Elementary. We are excited to share our ideas with them on our blogs and look forward to writing comments on their blog posts. We plan to meet up with them via Skype or video-conference later on in the spring.

In May each student will vote on which book he or she thinks should win the Red Cedar Book Award for this year. The organizers will tally all the votes and announce the winner at the end of May. It is all very exciting as there are some excellent titles again this year.

Freedom to Read Week In Canada Feb 23 to Mar 1

Come to the library to view our display of books that have been banned in some place or another for a number of reasons in North America. You might be surprised by some of the titles you see.

DEAR : Drop Everything And Read

This is a province-wide reading challenge with most elementary and secondary schools participating in BC.

Last year over 8,500 SD73 staff and students participated in D.E.A.R, dropping everything and reading for 20 minutes. This year we hope to increase that number, showcasing how important reading is to our staff and students in School District #73! 

The staff and students at École South Sahali will be participating on Monday, October 28 at 11:00 am.

The Red Cedar Book Award Club is up and running!

We had our first official meeting for the Red Cedar Book Award Club this past Tuesday. In our group we have 35 enthusiastic students from grades 4 to 7. We meet every Tuesday, in the library, during the last block of the day.

We will be sharing and discussing our ideas on which books we think are the best and why and we will finish by voting for the best books. All of the votes will be tallied from students across B.C. and in April the winner of the Red Cedar Book Award will be announced.

There is a selection of 13 novels to be read and a selection of  13 non-fiction books to be read. In order to get the opportunity to vote, the students must read at least 5 books from either section.  They are welcome to read 5 books from both sections and of course welcome to read more than 5 books from either section.

We would like to thank our Parent Advisory Council for purchasing the books for this program. We greatly appreciate it!
